On Balance

"I don't believe in a magic "Switch ON / Switch OFF" button at the intersection of our office time and private life. We are alive, our brain is alive. We just keep on dancing to the music of being and we can't do much but an amateur improvisation". - These thoughts are sort of a raw fashion journal entry, born out of a late lunch conversation, today, at CRI Paris. I can't put down the whole 1h conversation, but I will gladly share some quotes that I can get back to in the near future. It's an interesting subject to engage the brain with. A bit philosophical and provoking.
  1. Sometimes I ask myself - "Can we be aware of, then enjoy our life experiences 100% of the time, or we need to get back to our social norms (reality check), only to enjoy small guilty pleasures we sneak into our busy agenda?" To this question I recalled a quote by Dave Grohl  - “I don’t believe in guilty pleasures. If you f---ing like something, like it.” I discovered the quote in Show Your Work by Austin Kleon. See Books
  2. By definition, balance involves opposites - joy vs pain, static vs mobile, cold vs warm, maker vs consumer etc. The only balance state we ever achieve is while we move on and let opposite forces collide. As Einstein once said "Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”
  3. Think for a moment of ecstasy. On one hand, according to Oxford Dictionary "Ecstasy is an overwhelming feeling of great happiness or joyful excitement; / An emotional or religious frenzy or trance-like state, originally one involving an experience of mystical self-transcendence". On the other hand, the ancient Greek ancestor of the word ecstasy is ekstasis, formed of ek (outside or beyond) and stasis ( “the place in which one stands or should stand, position, posture, station”). If ecstasy means outside the static then we can define balance as a state of ecstasy.
Question: What does "balance" mean to you?
